Random Hip-Hop Stuff

Friday, January 23rd, 2009

Hello,

So this is my first post on this so I’m not sure what I’m doing. First off my name Is DJ Smilez I am a junior TCOM major here at BG. I have been on WFAL Radio for three years now, My show this semester is every Monday 10p-12a on BG Cable Ch. 21 and www.falconradio.org.

Ok here we go…

1) First of all what is up with all these great hip-hop artists (in my opinion) and these long awaited albums that seem to be taking forever to come out Jay-Z with Blueprint 3, Jadakiss with The Last Kiss (I’m mad they forced him to change it from Kiss My Ass), Dr. Dre with DeTox, Eminem with Relapse, and how about another Outkast album????

2) Second, Because if the big craze with artists having video blogs I have grown accustomed to watching Joe Budden (Remember his track Pump It Up???…circa 2002) and because I like watching Joe Budden TV and his antics, studio sessions with his new group Slaughterhouse (Joe, Joell Ortiz, Royce da 5′9, and Crooked I), and his good looking girlfriend Tahiri (check her out fellas lol) I’ve started listening to his mixtape series Mood Muzik and the couple tracks he’s released to be on his Internet Album The Padded Room (Feb. 24) but my problem with him has arisen the last couple days because I thought he was done with beefs when Ransom came at him talking a bunch of nonsense cuz Joe is more popular than him but Saigon Mr. Greatest Never Told that has been held back as much as Dre’s Detox album came at him just cuz Joe used his name in a freestyle that wasn’t meant to diss him. Joe actually took vital time to supply mor emusic and hilarious videos for me as a fan to make two very raw diss osns against Saigon. Now I know I said they were raw but if you were done with beefs why waste your time time with somebody whose album will never come out but as long as he has the great producer Just Blaze in his corner, he will stay somewhat relevant in Hip-hop.

Well that’s pretty much all I have for this week but more will come…

Importance of College Radio in Small Towns

Thursday, January 8th, 2009

I’m a huge college radio geek, having been on the air at a number of stations over the years, including WBGU. When I arrived in Bowling Green in 1995 I immediately sought out the college radio station because I wanted to stay connected with new music. I moved to Ohio from San Francisco for grad school and was incredibly worried that I’d completely lose touch with the music scene. I couldn’t have been more wrong.

After getting involved with WBGU I actually became much more in touch with music than I had been in San Francisco. For me, WBGU was vital to my cultural survival in Bowling Green. I met interesting music fanatics, band members, and some of the most creative people on campus. It really was a tight-knit community of folks who had radio shows, played in bands, and hit shows at Howard’s to support local music and touring indie bands.

I thought about my time at WBGU when I read some of the comments on an article today about the shut-down of college radio station KTXT in Lubbock, Texas. A commenter made the point that alternative music really didn’t have an audience in small town Texas. I couldn’t disagree more. Small towns need indie media even more than major cities do. So, keep up the great work at WBGU. My stint there from 1995 to 1997 was a fantastic experience and it got me back involved with college radio. I’ve been Djing at other college stations ever since.
