Haim
 
From Pointer to Andrews, sister acts have and will always have a place in the music scene. See the sisters Este, Danielle and Alana, three 20-something year olds who have been kicking music around since their early teens (along with  Dash Hutton for a little testosterone) from Los Angeles who are Haim, and with only a three-song EP and a couple of additional songs floating around to their collective names (as well as sold out shows and a ton of industry respect), these ladies work triple-harmonies, old school R&B, deep percussion and pop precision into well crafted nuggets of gold like their 2012 calling card “Forever” which made a ton of music fans sit up and take notice. AS these things go, Haim has signed to Polydor UK (people already love them over there) and if all goes as planned, we should have a full length album from the quartet this year. Keep your fingers crossed for that.

Caught a Ghost
Songwriter, producer, lead singer and leader of the band Jessie Nolan has an obvious devotion to music of the past such as blues and vintage soul and Caught a Ghost aims to capture their aspects and fashion them into something fresh. Nolan describes the name of his band Caught A Ghost as the sensation of being filled with the spirit of the past. “It’s an old expression. Musicians used to say you caught a ghost if you gave a good performance. Like you were possessed.” Nolan says. So along with his kindergarten classmate Stephen Edelstein on drums and additional vocals and percussion by actress Tessa Thompson, Caught a Ghost pays reverence to the music of yesterday and steps lively with it today by spicing it up with electro touches. They’ve definitely created a healthy buzz for themselves particularly with the Tuesday’s release of their Nightworks EP. If you’re a fan of neo-soul stylings of Fitz and the Tantrums, the Caught a Ghost is surely for you. From the Nightworks EP here’s ”Sleeping At Night.”

The Dig
NYC’s quartet the Dig (who took their name from the documentary “Dig” about bands the Dandy Warhols and Brian Jonestown Massacre) came together in 2008. The players are David Baldwin (vox, guitar), Emile Mosseri (vox, bass), Erick Eiser (keys, guitar) and Mark Demiglio (drums) and these guys have a flair for fresh sounding, hook solid, atmospheric tunes. Baldwin and Mosseri both pull vocal duties which tends to result in crisp, delicious harmonies; the stuff of really good power pop. Last year they followed up their widely acclaimed full length debut, Electric Toys with their second album, Midnight Flowers, where they show their ability to mood and mind-alter: sharp guitar with layers of keyboards where they take their smart pop sense and dose it with post punk goodness. The band’s musicality is excellent and when you hear them live, the songs hit a whole other level of awesome.

From Midnight Flowers comes ”I Already Forgot Everything You Said”- which is probably the smoothest and and most meditative kiss off song in a long time. Have a happy Valentines Day with that one.
