Big Black Delta

For fans of rock music, electronica may be one of those lines that’s just hard to cross but Jonathan Bates (formerly of Mellowdrone and a man with a sincere fascination with UFOs) may have figured out that happy medium where ravers and headbangers, alike, can meet for coffee and get along. When friend Alessandro Cortini (of Nine Inch Nails) gave him a laptop, Bates turned the gift into a new project and passion called Big Black Delta. It’s electro, pop and rock boundaries pushed together and fused, dance dynamics fulfilled and an otherworldly celestial sound that pays homage to better 80s synth. For a genre that can seem sterile and devoid warmth, Bates has composed a body of intelligent songs that emote with very human qualities with his full length album, BBDLP1. And don’t let the laptop-made music fool you; when Bates aka Big Black Delta performs live he’s equipped with not one but two drummers to provide percussive muscle. It’s simultaneously hot and cool.

Danielia Cotton

File this one under “Black Girls Rock”: From the mostly White and small town of Hopewell, New Jersey, Danielia covers many musical bases, some of which don’t often cross over: female, singer, songwriter, guitar player, Led Zeppelin fan, hard rocker, Black. One minute the richness, rasp and howl of her voice is taking you on a soulful journey, the next it’s inciting the urge to headbang. She does rock and roll, not R&B so general or stereotypical expectations tend to need revision. Thin Lizzy to Nona Hendryx to Tina Turner: these are some of the formidable footsteps that Danielia is walking alongside as opposed to merely following in. Her voice connects with the honesty of life’s real struggles with love, pain, loss, joy and darkness with a vengeance and emotional ferocity that’s as blunt as it is beautiful. Vocal talent is one thing that Danielia has in spades, but how she uses it is what impacts the mind and heart. Her third album, The Gun In Your Hand, dropped in October and, just as she does with demographics, the album crosses many genre lines. And her resume’s not shabby having played Lilith Fair and opened for legends such as Etta James, Bon Jovi, Gregg Allman, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Buddy Guy.

Check out Danielia as she performs Let It Ride- the girl has a set of pipes!

The Chevin
Taking their name from a ridge noted for its incredible natural beauty which overlooks the town of Otley in Leeds , UK’s the Chevin are one of High Voltage’s favorite finds due to the stunning natural beauty of singer Coyle Girelli’s operatic voice. Along with Mat Steel, Jon Langford and Mal Taylor, these guys construct alternative rock with a shiny post-punk gloss; songs that are arena-big (ala the Killers, U2 and Coldplay), play on the heart and even some that make you dance. In October 2011 they released a 5-song EP and the track “Champion” became one hell of a calling card to the world. Catching their first ever Los Angeles gig in January 2012 pretty much sealed the deal; so much so that HIgh Voltage named the Chevin as a “Top Pick” in their 2012 SXSW pocket guide and, as predicted, they blew music fans away during the week long Austin, TX festival. Since then they’ve been relentlessly touring, released a full length album, Borderland, performed on the David Letterman Show leaving Letterman damned near speechless, made lots of girls fall in love and are featured in the new Fall 2012 print issue of High Voltage Magazine as their “On The Rise” artist.
And if you catch them live, they’re easy to spot; they’ll be the four very focused-looking English gents and Coyle will be the one wearing a red rose on his lapel.
Check out their Letterman appearance HERE and be prepared to be blown away!
