What a year! My friends over at High Voltage have done an incredible job at bringing the best in up and coming bands to listeners of Dirty Glitter but to WBGU as well! This segment has become wildly popular with my listeners and I can’t wait to continue my collaboration with them in 2013!
Here are the latest bands to be featured during the 12.27.12 show of Dirty Glitter:
Arc & Stones
From Brooklyn, NY we have Dan Pellarin, Ben Cramer, Joe Doino and Eddy Bayes who are Arc & Stones. These guys have an aggressive sound that’s just waiting to be played on a big stage where Pellarin’s voice can reach the roof. The music is progressive in that it’s a complete package: instrumentation (dig the guitar in this track), lyrically sound, hooks and- of course- Pellarin’s fantastic vocals that capture and deliver some powerful emotion. They’re a rock band but you can hear the undercurrent of blues and there’s definitely some old soul fused in there. On February 12th, 2013 Arc & Stones will release their debut self-titled five song EP that’s very diverse but a great representation of what they’re capable of. From that EP comes “Say Goodbye” and by the end of the song you get the feeling that Pellarin meant every word he just said.

The Neighbourhood
Early Spring 2012: Take an American band from the general Los Angeles area over to the UK where they introduce themselves to the music world and stoke curiosity via a little single called “Female Robbery”, getting nods of approval from major music outlets like Earmilk, Nylon Magazine, NME, and BBC Radio 1…all while keeping a closed lid on their identity. A textbook example of a “buzz band”: everyone from fans to PR to labels wanted to know who these guys were and what else was up their sleeves. Less than 8 months later and back in the US the enigmatic Neighbourhood have played sold out shows on tour with Paul Banks (Interpol) and have more than their share of labels courting them. Fronted by Jesse Rutherford (a mere 20 years old), the Neighbourhood is a five-piece band who take Rutherford’s hip hop background to the place where it melds with indie-pop and rock seamlessly. One EP released, a full album on the way in 2013, you’ll do well to keep your eye on the Neighbourhood.

Dead Sara
High Voltage chose to close out the Dirty Glitter year with Dead Sara because 2012 has been nothing short of a monumental year for them. HV has been a fan, supporter and friend of this band since the days of Myspace and even featured them as the cover story of their Spring 2012 print issue because they knew that the world was about to get its face melted by them. Once their amazing self-titled debut album dropped in January and the single “Weatherman” hit the airwaves, Emily Armstrong, Sean Friday, Siouxsie Medley and Chris Null flipped a switch on the music world in a much needed way: here’s one of the hardest rocking bands to emerge in years and it’s founded and fronted by two women, Emily Armstrong (vocals) and Siouxsie Medley (guitar). Armstrong’s voice, which can go from songbird pretty to scream-sing in a heartbeat- can raise the hair on your arms and has been namecheck by the one and only Grace Slick as the only current voice that she admires. As a band, Dead Sara is four consummate, passionate musicians who make heart-pumping, head banging, fist pumping music that feels like punk, metal, rock and soul rolled into one. Bush picked them for the West coast leg of their tour, Spring found them on the road with Chevelle and the Used, from there they were a feature band on the Vans Warped tour, then ended 2012 touring with Offspring and Neon Trees. What’s next for them in 2013? Just an opening slot on tour with a little English band called Muse.
