DJ Haz-Mat*
DJ Haz-Mat* has been on the WBGU-FM airwaves since the Fall of 1999.
For the past decade+ his program “Wasteland” has featured an evolving mix of underground
electronic music, with a definite focus on Industrial music sub-culture. Various styles
and sub-genres have been explored on “Wasteland,” including (but not limited to) -
electro-industrial, coldwave, EBM, synth-pop & future-pop, rhythmic noise, power
electronics, dark ambient, martial, death industrial, and more. ”Wasteland” has
additionally branched out to include breakcore, IDM, and various other technoid forms.
“Wasteland” has also featured exclusive recordings of live performances, interviews with
musical artists and noisicians, and a radio-serial about ZOMBIES entitled “Week By Week
Armageddon,” produced exclusively for the program.
When DJ Haz-Mat* first began at WBGU-FM, he was the only “Industrial” music DJ.
Positive attention led to the attraction of new “Industrial” styled DJs, and DJ Haz-Mat*
created a new Music Department at WBGU-FM in 2002, IGE Music, or
Industrial/Gothic/Experimental Music Department.
Over the years, DJs came and went, and IGE Music evolved, eventually merging with the
RPM Music Department. (RPM is generally identified as a blanket radio industry term for
electronic dance music). Finally in 2009, the RPM/IGE Music Department @ WBGU-FM was
renamed to the simpler and clearly identified EMD – Electronic Music Department.
The Electronic Music Department (EMD) enjoyed a brief period of phenomenal growth and
success under the directorship of DJ Haz-Mat* and DJ What the Bleep, which included
special honors at the College Music Journal Music Marathon 2008.
At present (Spring 2011), EMD is largely inactive. DJ Haz-Mat* is now the only
electronic music DJ still broadcasting at WBGU-FM, and he is not currently Music
Director for EMD.
DJ Haz-Mat* has been a Specialty Music Director, the Training & Assessment Director,
Traffic and Public Service Announcement Director, unofficial Production dude, and
overall veteran go-to-guy for curmudgeonly wisdom on many WBGU-FM matters over the
years. Currently DJ Haz-Mat* is satisfied to simply host his program “Wasteland,” which
can be heard Thursday night / Friday morning from 12midnight until 2am.
