Lots of great music filled the air this past weekend at the Detroit Jazz Festival. I got to hear Terence Blanchard and Sonny Rollins in back-to-back shows opening night and, on Sunday, Gerald Cleaver’s Uncle June; a dynamic group co-led by Joe Lovano and Dave Douglas; Fred Hersch’s trio — and BGSU’s vocal jazz group, which sang to a large and enthusiastic noontime crowd.

My aim is to harness the festival’s musical energy — and knowledge gained from the JazzWeek Summit immediately preceding — to power this week’s editions of Jazz Unlimited, 9 a.m.-noon, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.
