Warships

There’s a good reason why Warships’ song “Sleeper Hold” has found its way onto many 2012 “Best of” song lists. This Los Angeles five piece, made up of Eric Chirco, Edson Choi, Elliot Craig, Timothy Pai, and John Ransom Tucker launched in the Fall of 2010 and working with a foundation of rock, they build songs that have a catchy lining of hooks, pristine guitar melodies and neck-moving grooves that make you want to listen to the tunes on repeat. A little pop-worthy, but that’s hardly a bad thing. If you want to play the “Recommended If You Like” game, if your ears dig the atmospheric sounds of Band of Horses or Fleet Foxes, then Warships is probably up your alley.

The Ceremonies
Band of brothers, anyone? And that’s in the literal sense because Matthew (who’s 21), Michael and Mark Cook (who are both 19 and fraternal twins) are the Ceremonies. While young in age and existence as a proper band, these guys seem to have the musical wits about them to step a tad sideways and a little out of the normal path of sound that you might come to expect from new bands today. They’re one of those under the radar bands out of the Southern California area but you can hear the possibilities and the bigger picture in this track, “Land of Gathering” (the only bit of music they’ve made public so far) with it’s playful drum beat, the horns and they employ some pretty high and wide vocal harmonies among them- almost Beach Boys-esque. They’re working on new music as we speak so look for more from the Ceremonies soon.

The Stone Foxes
Hailing from San Francisco, brothers Spence and Shannon Koehler, Aaron Mort and Elliot Peltman are a foursome of grooving storytellers and the tales they tell are fueled by the blues, rock and a healthy urge to stomp. They make a noise that sounds as if it should come blaring out of a stack of vintage amps due to the homage it pays to the likes of Zeppelin, the Stones and even the Band. It’s raw and rocking, a little scuzzy, swampy and rowdy yet these Bay Area guys are some of the nicest rock and rollers you’ll ever meet. Their third album called Small Fires gets released on Feb. 12th and you’ll find them out on the road bringing it to you live and, trust me, their live show is such a good, fun time,  you want to see them throw down on stage.
